Editorial Policy

How HomeCost Guide content is written, reviewed, updated, and corrected. Last updated October 2026.

Who writes our content

Guides are researched and written for HomeCost Guide as an organization — we do not publish under invented author personas or fabricated credentials. Every guide is checked claim-by-claim against its cited published sources before it goes live.

Editorial independence

Editorial decisions are made on research alone. Referral relationships with advertising partners (see our advertising disclosure) never determine what we cover, what numbers we publish, or what warnings we include. Our red-flag and scam sections exist precisely because an honest cost guide must tell readers what can go wrong.

Accuracy standards

  • Every specific figure is cited to the exact published source page.
  • Conflicting sources are shown as ranges, not averaged away silently.
  • Advice that could cost readers money (hiring, contracts, permits) is written conservatively — when in doubt, we tell readers to get a second quote.

Updates and corrections

Guides are re-checked quarterly. If you spot an error — a stale price, a broken source link, a figure that doesn't match its citation — tell us via the contact page. Verified corrections are published promptly, and the guide's "Updated" stamp is refreshed.

What we will not publish

  • Invented prices or statistics.
  • Paid placements presented as editorial content.
  • Contractor rankings influenced by referral relationships.
